Is Winchester the Most Beautiful Town in England?

England has many fine, historic and beautiful towns and villages but it would be hard to find a town that could surpass Winchester in its beauty.
When you think of the quintessential ancient, historic English town, what does you imagination conjure up? The town would be full of old medieval, Georgian and Victorian buildings that are nestled into one another. There would be a beautiful winding river running through the centre of it. Of course it would have a beautiful Norman church set in a green. The roads and lanes would be small and intimate, crammed with delightful shops and restaurants. What imagined English town would not have a king or two buried in the church grounds: perhaps even a saint or two. And of course it would have a long association with artists and writers, beguiled by the town charms; and would it be stretching the dream too far to suppose that world famous writers lived, died and were buried there.
If you come and visit Winchester you may think you are dreaming, for the town has all of the above and so much more.
The town is settled into the soft rolling hills and meadows that are found on the edge of the chalk-downs in the county of Hampshire. It would be fair to say that the county of Hampshire is what most envisage when the think of what the English landscape should look like. And the approach into Winchester on any road is delightful.
The River Itchen runs through the middle of the town. In fact many tributaries and streams run through the town. In medieval times the town was famous for it's cultivation of watercress (the plant is still grown outside of the town). Watercress requires water of exceptional clarity and purity in which to grow, and the River Itchen's water is crystal clear. In fact the river is so clean that when you stroll along its banks you can see the many fresh water trout in the river. And I'm not lying when I tell you that you can see anglers fly-fishing in the middle of the town! When you walk along the many riverside walks you will also see ducks, moorhens, swans and all manner of wildlife.
Winchester doesn't have a Normal church as its focal point; it has a Norman cathedral; arguably, the finest cathedral in England. The setting is also perfect. The cathedral has a park-like setting of grass and shady trees. In summer the vistor can picnic on the lawn along with the local residents.
Winchester was once the ancient capital of Anglo-Saxon England; the other half of England being occupied by Vikings. It was one man who kept the southern half of England free of Vikings and that was King Alfred the Great. He was a local boy, you know. He was crowned king of England in the cathedral and lived and died in the city. You can visit the spot where he was buried alongside his wife and eldest son. He is the only English king to have ever been given the epitaph 'the Great'.
You can also visit the tombs of other 'minor' kings of England in the cathedral.
And what about the saints I mentioned earlier. Well, we've all heard about St Swithin's day and how, if it rains on this day it'll rain for the next 40 days. St. Swithin was tutor to King Alfred and was also buried in a tomb in the cathedral. It'll be no surprise to the reader now, to be told that there are other, lesser saints buried within the cathedral.
The beauty of Winchester has always attracted royalty, the wealthy and famour people of the day. It has always been a magnet for writers. Keats was a frequent visitor as was Anthony Trollope; both writer based works on the city and its surroundings. Perhaps the most famous writer who lived in Winchester was Jane Austen who wrote some of the most enduring novels in English. Jane Austen was born in Hampshire and lived most of her life in the county. She died in Winchester and was also buried inside the cathedral.
The items of interest mentioned above are just a fraction of what the visitor can find of interest in this city. There is much, much more. Even if the visitor was oblivious to the town's rich and proud history and the famous citizens who live and died there, the visitor could not miss the incomparable charm and beautiful that the city has in abundance.

California is one of the most exciting states in the country, both to live and to visit. I have lived in California for about half my life and I have no desire to leave the state. I have also enjoyed touring most of the state, from Mt. Shasta to Yosemite to San Diego to Palm Springs. California is definitely not to be missed!
I first visited California at age six, along with the rest of my family. My parents took my sister and me to Disneyland on my sixth birthday and I loved it! We also visited San Francisco, San Diego, and Big Sur on the trip. My only unpleasant experience was getting carsick in Big Sur, due to my father driving fast along the meandering coastal Highway 1.
My family moved from Cleveland to San Francisco when I was eight. For years, we all bragged about how much of an improvement it was. Indeed, San Francisco is one of the most beautiful places in the world in my opinion. I now live in Los Angeles, but I still visit the City By the Bay four or five times a year. Fun places to see in SF include Golden Gate Park, Chinatown, The Embarcadero, Fisherman's Wharf, and the Presidio.
Los Angeles is another very exciting city. The Los Angeles area is home to Disneyland, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and Laguna Beach. I enjoy living in LA, despite dealing with the high volume of traffic along the freeways. LA has something going on for everyone.
I used to visit San Diego once a year or so, though I haven't been there for several years. San Diego is another very fun place. In particular, I used to enjoy Balboa Park, home of the world-famous San Diego Zoo as well as several museums. La Jolla, the locale of Black's Beach and UC San Diego, is another enjoyable spot near San Diego.
Another exciting thing to see in California are the national parks. California has eight national parks, more than any other state except for Alaska, which also has eight. My parents first took me to Yosemite when I was nine years old and I loved it! I was awed by the beauty of the Yosemite Valley, including the Yosemite Falls, Half Dome, and El Capitan. Since then, I have been back about 20 times.

They constructed the beautiful star shaped Chennakeshava temple at Belur, which took 103 years and 3 generations to complete the task. 16 kms away lies Halebid, which is also famous for its magnificent temples, set up on raised platform. Halebid was their earlier capital during 12th and 13th centuries AD, when it was known as Dwarasamudra. Even after 87 years of laborious work, the task was never completed at Halebid. One can spend days together admiring the beauty of these architecture marvels.
7. Shravanabelagola
Located 147 kms from Bangalore and 83 kms from Mysore at Hassan District, Shravanabelagola is one of the most popular Jain pilgrim centers . Shravanabelagola is wedged between Vindhyagiri and Chandragiri hills. A giant monolithic statue (58 ft) of Bhagawan Bahubali (Lord Gomaetheswara), said to be the world's largest monolithic statue, is standing on the Vindhyagiri hills as a monument of peace.

This historic town is famous for the cave temples built by Chalukya kings, who ruled Deccan in 6th and 7th centuries and Badami was their capital. 4. Madikere
This picturesque, charming town is situated at an elevation of 5000 ft above sea level, offering you breathtaking views. Madikere is the headquarters of Kodagu (Coorg), called as Scotland of India. Located 350 kms away from Bangalore, Hampi was the capital of famous Vijayanagar Empire, who ruled South India from 14th to 16th century AD. Located 220 kms from Bangalore, on the banks of river Yagachi, in Hassan District, Belur was once the capital city of the Hoysala dynasty, who ruled Karnataka during 11th and 12th centuries. They constructed the beautiful star shaped Chennakeshava temple at Belur, which took 103 years and 3 generations to complete the task. 16 kms away lies Halebid, which is also famous for its magnificent temples, set up on raised platform. Halebid was their earlier capital during 12th and 13th centuries AD, when it was known as Dwarasamudra. Even after 87 years of laborious work, the task was never completed at Halebid. One can spend days together admiring the beauty of these architecture marvels.
7. Shravanabelagola
Located 147 kms from Bangalore and 83 kms from Mysore at Hassan District, Shravanabelagola is one of the most popular Jain pilgrim centers . Shravanabelagola is wedged between Vindhyagiri and Chandragiri hills. A giant monolithic statue (58 ft) of Bhagawan Bahubali (Lord Gomaetheswara), said to be the world's largest monolithic statue, is standing on the Vindhyagiri hills as a monument of peace.
8. Badami
This historic town is famous for the cave temples built by Chalukya kings, who ruled Deccan in 6th and 7th centuries and Badami was their capital. Among the rock-cut and structural monuments, the most richly decorated are the cave temples, which are carved into the cliff on the southern side. There are four such cave temples in Badami. The natural surroundings enhance the aesthetic appeal of these cave temples.
9. Pattadakkal
The sacred complex at Pattadakal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is situated on the banks of the River Malprabha. Pattadakal is famous for its 8th-century temples, built by Chalukya kings during their reign. These are built in the combination of North Indian and South Indian styles.
10. Bijapur
Located 530 kms from Bangalore, Bijapur is famous for the historical monuments like Gol Gumbaz, which is the second largest tomb in the world. In the circular balcony of Gol Gumbaz, visitors can witness its greatest marvel. There are more monuments in Bijapur, such as Jumma Masjid, Ibrahim Roza etc. Bijapur was the capital of Adil Shahi dynasty who ruled this land during 13th century.

Probably the most beautiful country in the world. There is nothing you can compare to it, and that happens because nowhere in the world you can find such a small place with so many different natural things to see. And as the new tourism promo says: "Welcome to the youngest country in the world".
All lands were already discovered before any human ever set foot in New Zealand. At same time, the geography of the country as we see it nowadays was pretty different not a long time ago. Separating first from the the Antarctica and Australia, when they were forming a single continent, New Zealand went sailing alone and during one period, it was nearly disappeared under the water.
Eventually, tectonic movements made the land gain altitude again to end with the image that maps offer today. Placed in the middle of a zone with tectonic movement, the North island is actually being pushed in one direction and the South Island in the other. All this underground activity has had a strong power in creating a long range of volcanoes on the North Island, and a huge mountain range at the south, the Southern Alps, with the ceiling at about 3800m.
That dramatic continuous modification of the surface caused that New Zealand today is such a varied country, where we can find from massive volcanoes to long white sand beaches, blue lakes, sub-tropical forests and huge snowed mountains.
Something that makes a difference from other countries is the conditions in which animal life had the evolution. No predators where found ever in the island, so birds became losing the need to fly. And the effect was so tremendous that they even ended losing their wings! One clear example is the kiwi, the national bird. Don't be mistaken. It really has wings, but to see them you need to catch the animal and try to find them. So little cute useless wings has the shy kiwi!
Together with the kiwi, a great animal, possibly the biggest in the world as it used to reach more than 2 meters high, was another wingless bird called Moa. Unfortunately for them, when the Maori people came from the islands and arrived to New Zealand, they became the first predator in this lands. And absolute massacre happened and the Moas were extincted. The amount of meat for the hungry Maoris was a too strong temptation.
On the other hands, the Maoris learned the lesson and became to fall in love with their lands, with animals and nature and everything living that was around. Everybody places gods in different places. We Christians close them in churches, but they learned to place their gods in nature, and they learned to respect it and live together in harmony.
The situation could have not been worst then when the English discovered this lands. The arrival was not violent, but the aim of the conquerors to transform the wild nature in something that could seem like home make an absolute disaster to the natural environment. Also, with their boats they brought many kind of animals that were not present before, rats, sheep, and many more, as well as new species of plants.
The effect was devastating and nearly a 70% of the forests were destroyed. The aim of the retired soldiers to transform the environment in somewhere they could live in reached points that still today are present there, like the Bridge to Nowhere. Literally, they created a bridge to cross to some lands they wanted to cultivate, but the power of nature conquering their lands was so strong that they had to go back. Nowadays this bridge crosses above a river, and once you are on the other side, you find yourself in the middle of nowhere. Nature has gained back its property!
Fortunately for the country, and thanks in part to the experience and influence of the Maori people, new laws were signed, massive protests against the destruction of the trees happened, and the battle began to get back to Nature territory.
Nowadays, still many things resisted all the attacks. This innocent land suffered too much, scars are visible in most places, many tears were dropped by the trees. But thanks to the strong battle that was fought there, nowadays the kiwi spirit is one of the most respectful for nature, in an aim to protect what is still there and expand it in order to bring to nature what once was stolen.
An applause for every kiwi in the world. Your spirit will succeed. Together you saved your country and kept it being the most beautiful land in the world. Keep fighting and bring that land back to its origin!
